Surge protective devices (SPDs) and surge voltage suppressors (TVSSs) are commonly used in electrical equipment installed in distribution panels, process control systems, communications systems, and other heavy-duty industrial systems to protect against momentary surge current and voltage spikes, including those caused by lightning. Smaller versions of these devices are sometimes installed in residential service entrance distribution panels to protect home equipment from similar hazards.
