Installation Location Of Surge Protector
Installation Location
According to IEC 131221 (LPZ) concepts, surge protective device should be installed when electrical lines cross the boundary between two lightning protection zones. Depending on the location and withstand voltage level of the equipment, protection levels can be divided into three or more levels. However, the protectors must be well coordinated, distributing the acceptable withstand value and the original lightning threat value between the surge protector levels according to their energy withstand capabilities to effectively reduce the surge withstand capability of the equipment being protected. However, due to process requirements or other reasons, the protected equipment may not be installed directly at the interface but rather near it. In this case, if the line can withstand the generated surge voltage, surge protection device can be installed at the protected equipment. The metal shield or shield of the line should first be connected to an equipotential bonding connection at the interface. In practice, power supply SPDs are generally installed in the main distribution room, in distribution boxes on each floor, and in front of the protected equipment, achieving good protection results.
